  • Fire Safety – At the conclusion of this lesson, participants will be able to: explain the role of CERTs in fire safety identify and reduce potential fire risks in the home and workplace conduct a basic “size-up” for a fire emergency utility control, buddy system, and backup teams identify the locations of hazardous materials in the community and home, and reduce the risk from hazardous materials in the home.

  • Disaster Preparedness – At the conclusion of this lesson, participants will be able to: describe the types of hazards that are most likely to affect their community describe the functions of CERTs and identify the steps to prepare themselves for a disaster.

    The training covers a variety of topics including: CERT members also are encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community.ĬERTs may participate in activities such as emergency shelters, evacuating residents during wild fires, re-routing traffic around accidents and monitoring and supporting firefighters (rehab) during extended incidents.ĬERT Basic Training is held at least once per year and includes both classroom learning and field exercises.

    Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help. The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations.
